Turns out even hidden gems are breaking tourism records. Unquestionably, more travelers are scoping out secret hideaways to avoid unsightly crowds and touristy prices.
You know what I’m talking about. We’ve all been on vacation where everything seemed perfect until the bill arrives charging $38 for cheeseburgers.
Well, that’s not the case for one underrated Caribbean island, where you’ll find unspoiled shores and authentic experiences despite new flights putting this up-and-coming destination on the map.
While hordes of people flock to such places as Punta Cana, Montego Bay, and scatter across The Bahamas, little known St. Vincent and The Grenadines is breaking all-time visitor records too, exceeding a new six-figure benchmark for the first time becoming one of the regions’ trendiest getaways.
Whether it be the postcard beaches of Bequia or volcanic landscapes, you can enjoy translucent waters, explore lush rainforests, dive among kaleidoscopic coral reefs, or simply unwind in posh beachfront villas.
Island? Archipelago? Who Cares, Just Go!
On the off chance you work for Merriam Webster, you might be cringing at the fact I’m calling St. Vincent and The Grenadines an ‘island’, but no more than I’m cringing at the fact of how time consuming it is to accurately type out “St. Vincent and The Grenadines”.
Copy and paste, here we go!
By definition, St. Vincent and The Grenadines is an archipelago (ah, another tough word!), but since you’ll want to as many islands as possible encompassing this archipelagic nation.
So, we’re going with “island” to sum it all up.
As more and more travelers make use of their passports across the Caribbean, whether it be by plane or cruise, there’s no denying St. Vincent and The Grenadines is on the rise, which is why more airlines have taken notice wanting in on the action.
On New Year’s Eve, we reported on a pair of new flights from New York City and Charlotte launching to this stunning “island” in last January, where it’s recently been reported travelers have taken advantage of, jetting off to this off-path destination in search of an untouched paradise.
St. Vincent is the main island, followed by a string of smaller islands known as ‘the Grenadines’. While these clusters of islands have become more popular over the last year or so, it’s still feasible to find your own slice of paradise, whether inland at staggering waterfalls or secluded coves dotting the seascape.
No wonder Pirates of the Caribbean chose to film here. No worries, though; there are no reports that Amber Heard left any surprises in the resort beds.
Lavish Resorts & Bungalows: Where To Stay
A quick Google search shows travelers have fallen in love with St. Vincent and The Grenadines’ array of stays, many of which are upscale resorts like Liming Bequia, a 5-star haven with an seaside pool and top-notch service from the 24-hour front desk.
You’ll forget all about the Caribbean’s household names at this tranquil escape, but there are many more to choose from too if you’re seeking a traditional resort, and even (two-story) beachfront bungalows at beloved name brands like Sandals, described as ‘well manicured with pools everywhere’.
According to TripAdvisor, these are the top 5 resorts in St. Vincent and The Grenadines:
- Palm Island Resort & Spa
- Bequia Beach Hotel
- Sandals Saint Vincent
- Petit St. Vincent Resort
- Mandarin Oriental, Canouan
Best Beaches To Visit
With numerous blip-on-the-map islands and the grand island of St. Vincent, one can surmise the only headache you may face here is deciding which pristine beach to visit.
Certainly the most notable is Bequia, the largest island within the collective Grenadines. Here, you’ll find Princess Margaret Beach, arguably the crown jewel of the region, as well as the idyllic shores of Lower Bay Beach and the white-sand real-life postcard of Friendship Bay, just to name a few.
For those who love to dive in both figuratively and literally, Tobago Cays is your best bet for snorkeling extensive, vibrant coral reefs.
It’s also important to note how safe St. Vincent and The Grenadines are — yet another reason to consider vacationing here.
As The Bahamas has received 3 official travel warnings in the past year or so, and other popular islands such as Jamaica deal with similar advisories, St. Vincent and The Grenadines is listed as Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, the lowest designation, with the only real threat being Mother Nature.
