About The Great Wildebeest Migration

Serengeti Safari Wildebeest Migration

It is estimated that well over 2 million animals spread across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, will migrate throughout the year.

The Gnu Migration (Wildebeest Migration), is pretty much reliant upon the rains occurring, in this part of Africa.

These animals follow a defined route followed for many years, migrating to fresh grazing land and water. Rain does alert the wildebeest to start migrating in search of food and water, but nobody knows, exactly when the rain will fall.

Although variations occur from year to year, the Serengeti migration follows a reasonably predictable annual cycle, dictated by local rainfall patterns.

These animals will migrate in a circular pattern throughout the year, covering over 3000 kilometers/1900 miles on their constant movement in; Kenya & Tanzania.

The photo above shows the typical Serengeti annual migration routes.

As you can see, the animals follow the weather patterns as they change throughout the year. We were towards the end of the migration, watching the herds travel from; Northern Serengeti and crossing the Mara River.

We were so fortunate, to witness literally thousands of wildebeests crossing the Mara, beginning their journey south.
This is their {Dry-Wet} transition south, to greener grazing pastures and water.

The journey across the Mara River is difficult and without danger as well. From getting swept away in the strong currents, along with many; crocodiles and 🦛 hippos, waiting down stream.

What remains a mystery and something we even observed, is some will make the dangerous crossing, turn around and then go back. Perhaps their family members didn’t cross at the same time, and want to stay with them.

Usually from; January to April, the herd will remain in the southern part of Serengeti. These are the months, calving takes place. Afterwards, they will start their slow journey, back to the north.

There are numerous viewpoints along the Mara River, which drivers have access to. An experienced guide, will be in regular contact with other safari guides, who are also watching the herds movements.

Once a herd is spotted, it’s then a throw of the dice. Will they cross, or just think about crossing.

You will normally leave your overnight camp with a boxed lunch, to carry with you on, your days safari. This was great to have, as you can be expected, to wait and follow the herd along the river, for hours on end.

But believe me, it’s definitely worth the wait!
