Hot Springs, Arkansas has been a destination for rest and rejuvenation for centuries. Native American tribes were the first to recognize the healing properties of the area’s thermal waters. Later, in the 19th century, the city blossomed into a bustling retreat for those seeking both wellness and a touch of luxury. Today, Hot Springs National Park preserves this legacy, offering visitors the chance to soak in its natural beauty and therapeutic waters.

Interestingly, Hot Springs National Park is the oldest protected area in the National Park System. While it might not be as sprawling as Yellowstone or Yosemite, its unique focus on the thermal springs and their historical significance makes it a standout destination.

Exploring Bathhouse Row

One of Hot Springs’ most iconic attractions is Bathhouse Row, a collection of eight historic bathhouses that line Central Avenue. Each bathhouse has its own story, blending history, culture, and relaxation.

  • Quapaw and Buckstaff Bathhouses: These two bathhouses still offer traditional thermal baths and spa treatments. From soothing soaks to rejuvenating massages, they continue to carry on Hot Springs’ wellness tradition.
  • Fordyce Bathhouse: Now a visitor center and museum, this beautifully restored building provides fascinating insights into the history of the springs and the “golden age” of bathing culture.
  • Superior Bathhouse Brewery: This one is especially unique — it’s the only brewery located inside a national park. They even use the thermal spring water to craft their beer, making it a must-visit for craft beer enthusiasts.
  • Hale Bathhouse: Converted into a luxury boutique hotel, the Hale offers visitors the chance to stay in a piece of history while enjoying modern comforts. Thermal water is available at each room.
  • Lamar Bathhouse: Home to the Bathhouse Emporium, this space celebrates local craftsmanship with its selection of handmade goods and souvenirs.

For history buffs, the Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa just down the street is another must-see. This iconic hotel has hosted everyone from Al Capone to Babe Ruth and even a few U.S. presidents. Guests can book spa packages or simply soak in the ambiance of a place steeped in history.
