If you love Mexico, but you’ve had enough of Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and basically anywhere else that’s been overrun with your fellow gringos in recent years, this one’s for you:
As part of one of the biggest single-airline expansions, the U.S. flag carrier is launching nonstop flights to Puerto Escondido, a fast-growing leisure destination on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, away from the jam-packed Caribbean.
Located in the state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido has been gaining traction lately as a more laid-back alternative to Mexico’s usual tourism hotspots, offering sandy beaches, a thriving backpacker scene, and affordable prices.
American Airlines Will Start Offering Nonstop Flights To Puerto Escondido From Dallas
Some will say it’s far too soon to celebrate, but we’re truly exhilarated to announce that, from December 3, 2025, American Airlines will be adding Puerto Escondido (PXM) to their flight map.
While United will continue flying from Houston (IAH), American will launch service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), offering residents of the second-busiest Texan hub more convenient access to the paradisaical beach retreat.
There is a lot that’s yet to be disclosed, but we do know at this point that there will be flights twice a week, and an Embraer 175 aircraft has been deployed, with Economy and Premium cabin options.
At this point, one-way fares have not been announced, yet on the other hand, American has assured the route will be available year-round, making them the only airline to operate direct flights from Dallas to PXM, regardless of season.
Why Visit Puerto Escondido In 2025
The surfing capital of Mexico, it is home to some of the country’s most beautiful (and unspoiled) beaches, including Zicatela, best known as the Mexican Pipeline, due to its tall, barreling waves and guesthouse-lined coast.
Other beaches, like Carrizalillo and Puerto Angelito, are preferred by beginner surfers and swimmers, as the seas there can be calmer.
Puerto Escondido was a fishing village before developers found it, and luckily for the culture buffs, it still retains much of that original charm: Zicatela, for instance, is lined by a number of family-run seafood restaurants, serving food at affordable prices.
Popular lunch spots on the beachfront include Chicama, a no-frills Peruvian famous for their fresh ceviche, Rosarito, everyone’s go-to spot for tlayudas and grilled fish, and Agua Salá, a mid-range eatery featuring the best tuna tartare in town.
On average, a meal for 2 in a downtown cantina will set you back by $39.35 (according to Numbeo), and don’t forget you can always gorge on delicious $2—$4 seafood tacos from any street corner vendor.
With its youthful atmosphere and high concentration of surfers and backpackers, Puerto Escondido feels like a far cry from Cancun’s Hotel Zone, but that’s not to say it’s undeveloped: it simply feels more ‘local’, or as some would argue, less inauthentic.
American Airlines Is Now The Biggest U.S. Airline Operating In Mexico
This year, American Airlines seems to be banking heavily on Mexico.
Puerto Escondido is the latest exciting new launch, but this year so far, we’ve seen them start flights to Tijuana (TIJ), a busy financial center just south of California, Tulum (TQO), Mexico’s newest commercial airport serving the Caribbean town, and Veracruz (VER), on the Gulf.
Just last month, they also added Tampico (TAM), cementing their position as the U.S. airline with the best connections to the Gulf, and soon enough, they’ll be ramping up service in well-established markets, most notably Cancun, which will soon host Oklahoma-originated flights.
