Sitting Bull Falls trail is a popular hike that takes you along a series of waterfalls in a desert canyon inside the Lincoln National Forest. Located southwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the United States. The desert oasis features spring-fed waterfalls that fall 150 feet (45.7 m) dropping to a large pool of water at the bottom where visitors can swim, sunbathe, and picnic. Some prefer climbing the Sitting Bull Falls stairs to the top of the falls where you can swim in smaller pools.

How to Get to Sitting Bull Falls

If you’re coming from Carlsbad – it is about an hour’s drive through back roads to reach the falls. There is no cell service or gas stations along the way once you get on Highway 285. So make sure you stock up on snacks/drinks and gas before you begin your drive to Sitting Bull Falls.

Sitting Bull Falls Trail

Sitting Bull Falls is a 0.7-mile out-and-back trail that is considered moderately challenging due to its steep steps that lead to the top of the falls. You don’t have to hike to reach the pool below, they are easily accessible. If you choose to extend your hike past the upper falls – take the Sitting Bull Falls trail (68) as deep into the mountains as you like. The trail eventually breaks up. You have the option to take the Overlook Trail (215) or continue on 68.

The signs can be confusing. Since the trail isn’t frequently hiked, some areas are difficult to find the deeper into the canyon you go. This is especially true at river crossings, where there might be multiple paths across the water to the other side.

Keep an eye out for signs to guide you and bring a park map or a picture of one. This will help you navigate where you are and how long it will take you to get back to your car. We almost got caught in the dark. We had to turn around at the Overlook Trail so we were not hiking back in the dark.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to go to Sitting Bull Falls?

If you have an “America the Beautiful” national park pass, you can visit for free. If you do not, you’ll need to purchase a $5 entrance fee which is paid by cash upon arrival.

Why is it called Sitting Bull Falls?

The origin of the name Sitting Bull Falls remains unknown. One theory is that the falls were named after a Sioux medicine man. The Apache name for the area is gostahanagunti which means hidden gulch.

What do I wear to Sitting Bull Falls?

If you plan on swimming, make sure you bring a bathing suit, towel, and sunscreen. I recommend hiking first before a swim. The water can be a bit chilly and would feel refreshing after a hike in the sun. For hiking, I recommend shorts, a sunshirt, and good hiking boots. There is no shade and the sun can be brutal even in the winter.
